Why Advanced Technology Matters in Modern Dentistry

Dentistry has evolved dramatically over the past decade, and the integration of advanced technology has revolutionized how we diagnose, plan, and deliver dental care. At East Wind Dental Care, we believe that investing in the latest dental technology is an investment in your health, comfort, and peace of mind.

The Difference Technology Makes

More Accurate Diagnoses:

Advanced imaging technology allows Dr. Ostovar to see what traditional methods simply cannot detect. Digital X-rays reveal early decay, bone loss, and infection before they become painful problems. 3D imaging shows the precise position of nerves, sinuses, and bone structure, enabling safer, more predictable treatment planning—especially for dental implants and complex procedures.

Enhanced Patient Comfort:

Modern technology has transformed the dental experience. Digital impressions eliminate the gagging and discomfort of traditional putty molds. Laser dentistry reduces bleeding, swelling, and post-treatment discomfort. Intraoral cameras help you understand your treatment without confusion or uncertainty. When patients understand what’s happening and feel comfortable throughout the process, anxiety decreases and outcomes improve.

Faster Treatment Times:

Technology saves time without sacrificing quality. CEREC same-day crowns mean you can walk in with a damaged tooth and leave the same day with a permanent restoration—no temporary crowns, no second appointments. Digital X-rays appear instantly on screen, eliminating processing time and allowing Dr. O to discuss findings immediately.

Superior Precision:

Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) creates restorations that fit better and last longer than traditional methods. Digital treatment planning allows Dr. Ostovar to plan procedures with millimeter-level accuracy. Cone beam CT scans provide 3D visualization that makes complex treatments safer and more predictable.

Better Long-Term Outcomes:

When treatment is more precise, diagnoses are more accurate, and procedures are less invasive, the result is dental work that lasts longer and feels better. Technology helps Dr. O catch problems early when they’re easier and less expensive to treat, preventing major issues down the road.

Our Commitment to Excellence

At East Wind Dental Care, we don’t adopt technology just because it’s new—we invest in proven innovations that demonstrably improve patient care. Every piece of equipment in our practice has been selected because it enhances accuracy, comfort, or outcomes. From the moment you enter our office, you’ll experience the difference that modern dentistry makes.

3D Cone Beam CT Scanner: Seeing Beyond the Surface

One of the most significant advancements in dental imaging is 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). This technology provides Dr. Ostovar with a three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw, sinuses, and nerves—information that’s simply impossible to obtain from traditional 2D X-rays.

What is Cone Beam CT?

Cone Beam CT is an advanced imaging technology that captures hundreds of images in a single rotation around your head. These images are then reconstructed by computer software into a detailed 3D model of your oral and facial structures. The entire scan takes less than 30 seconds, and you simply stand or sit still while the machine rotates around you.

Unlike traditional dental X-rays that show flat, two-dimensional images, CBCT reveals:

  • The exact thickness and density of your jawbone
  • The precise location of nerves and blood vessels
  • The position of teeth, including impacted wisdom teeth
  • Sinus cavities and their relationship to upper teeth
  • TMJ (jaw joint) structure and position
  • Airway anatomy
  • The presence and extent of infections or cysts

When is 3D Imaging Used?

Dental Implant Planning:

This is perhaps the most important application of CBCT technology. Before placing dental implants, Dr. Ostovar needs to know exactly where nerves and sinuses are located, how much bone is available, and what the bone quality is like. CBCT provides all this information, allowing for precise implant placement that avoids complications and maximizes long-term success.

Wisdom Teeth Evaluation:

CBCT shows the exact position of impacted wisdom teeth and their relationship to nearby nerves. This information helps Dr. O determine whether extraction is necessary and plan the safest approach.

TMJ Disorder Diagnosis:

3D imaging reveals the structure of the jaw joint, allowing Dr. Ostovar to assess arthritis, joint damage, or disc displacement that might be causing pain or clicking.

Root Canal Treatment:

CBCT can identify hidden canals, unusual root anatomy, or infections that might not be visible on standard X-rays, improving the success rate of root canal therapy.

Orthodontic Treatment Planning:

3D imaging shows tooth root position and jaw structure, helping plan orthodontic treatment more effectively.

Evaluation of Pain or Pathology:

When the cause of oral pain is unclear, or when suspicious areas appear on regular X-rays, CBCT provides the detailed information needed for accurate diagnosis.

Benefits of Cone Beam Technology

Safety:

While CBCT uses more radiation than a traditional dental X-ray, it uses significantly less than a medical CT scan. The focused beam and rapid capture time minimize radiation exposure while providing maximum diagnostic value.

Comprehensive Information:

A single CBCT scan provides more information than dozens of traditional X-rays, reducing the need for multiple imaging sessions.

Better Treatment Planning:

When Dr. Ostovar can see your anatomy in 3D, treatment planning becomes more precise, predictable, and safe.

Avoiding Complications:

CBCT helps identify potential problems before they occur, such as a nerve too close to an implant site or a sinus that might be compromised during treatment.

Patient Education:

Seeing your own anatomy in 3D helps you understand your condition and the recommended treatment. Dr. O can show you exactly what’s happening and why a particular approach is recommended.

Digital X-Rays: Safer, Faster, Better

Digital radiography has replaced traditional film X-rays at East Wind Dental Care, and for good reason. This technology offers significant advantages in safety, speed, image quality, and environmental impact.

How Digital X-Rays Work

Instead of using film that must be developed with chemicals, digital X-rays use electronic sensors that capture images instantly. The image appears on a computer screen within seconds, allowing Dr. Ostovar to review and discuss findings with you immediately.

90% Less Radiation

The most significant advantage of digital X-rays is the dramatic reduction in radiation exposure. Digital sensors are far more sensitive than traditional film, requiring up to 90% less radiation to produce a high-quality image. This means you receive the diagnostic benefits of X-rays with minimal radiation exposure—about the same amount you’d receive from a few hours of sun exposure or a short airplane flight.

For patients who need regular X-rays due to ongoing treatment or high risk of decay, this reduction in radiation exposure is especially important. Parents appreciate knowing that their children are receiving the diagnostic care they need with the lowest possible radiation dose.

Instant Results

Traditional film X-rays required several minutes for processing, and the quality couldn’t be assessed until after processing was complete. If an X-ray was over- or under-exposed, it had to be retaken. Digital X-rays appear instantly on screen, allowing Dr. O to verify quality immediately and, if necessary, retake an image right away. This saves time and reduces radiation exposure.

Superior Diagnostic Quality

Digital X-rays can be enhanced, magnified, and adjusted for contrast and brightness, making it easier to detect small cavities, hairline fractures, or early bone loss. Dr. Ostovar can zoom in on specific areas, highlight subtle changes, and compare current images to previous X-rays to track changes over time.

The ability to digitally enhance images means early detection of problems when they’re smaller, easier, and less expensive to treat.

Better Patient Communication

When your X-rays appear on a large screen right in front of you, understanding your dental health becomes much easier. Dr. O can point out areas of concern, show you the difference between healthy and diseased tissue, and explain treatment recommendations using your actual images. This visual education helps you make informed decisions about your care.

Environmental Benefits

Traditional X-ray processing required toxic chemicals (developers and fixers) that had to be disposed of properly. Digital X-rays eliminate this chemical waste entirely, making our practice more environmentally responsible. Additionally, there’s no film to manufacture, package, or dispose of.

Efficient Record Keeping

Digital images are stored electronically in your patient file, making them easy to access, back up, and share (with your permission). If you’re referred to a specialist, we can send your X-rays electronically in seconds—no waiting for copies or risking lost films. If you move or change dental offices, your X-rays can be transferred quickly and easily.

Intraoral Cameras: See What Dr. O Sees

Understanding your dental condition is the first step toward making informed treatment decisions. That’s why East Wind Dental Care uses intraoral cameras—tiny, high-resolution cameras that allow you to see inside your own mouth in real-time.

What is an Intraoral Camera?

An intraoral camera is a small, pen-sized device with a camera at the tip. Dr. Ostovar or one of our hygienists moves this camera around your mouth, capturing detailed, magnified images that appear instantly on a screen. The camera acts like a mirror, allowing you to see what the dentist sees—but much more clearly.

The Power of Visual Education

Most people have never really seen inside their own mouth. You might see your front teeth when you smile, but what about the back molars? The spaces between teeth? The condition of old fillings or crowns? The intraoral camera reveals it all in high-definition detail.

Benefits of Seeing Your Own Teeth:

Understanding Your Diagnosis:

When Dr. O explains that you have a cavity, seeing the dark spot or defect in the tooth makes the diagnosis clear and understandable. There’s no confusion or uncertainty.

Making Informed Decisions:

When you can see a cracked filling, worn tooth, or area of decay, treatment recommendations make more sense. You’re not taking the dentist’s word for it—you’re seeing the evidence yourself.

Tracking Progress:

Intraoral cameras help you see improvements over time, such as healthier gums after a deep cleaning or successful whitening results.

Reducing Anxiety:

Many patients feel anxious about dental treatment because they don’t understand what’s happening or why treatment is necessary. Visual evidence reduces this anxiety by providing clarity and transparency.

Early Detection

The intraoral camera magnifies teeth up to 40 times their actual size, allowing Dr. Ostovar to detect problems at their earliest stages—often before they show up on X-rays or cause symptoms. Hairline cracks, tiny areas of decay, worn enamel, and gum recession become visible, allowing for early intervention.

Early detection means:

  • Smaller, less expensive treatments
  • Less invasive procedures
  • Better long-term outcomes
  • Preservation of more natural tooth structure

Building Trust Through Transparency

At East Wind Dental Care, we believe in complete transparency. The intraoral camera is a key tool in building trust with our patients. When you can see your dental conditions clearly, you understand that Dr. O’s recommendations are based on objective evidence, not unnecessary upselling.

Improved Documentation

Intraoral camera images become part of your permanent record, providing visual documentation of your dental health over time. These images can be compared from visit to visit to track changes, monitor areas of concern, and document treatment outcomes.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns: Advanced CAD/CAM Technology

Traditionally, getting a dental crown required two appointments spread over several weeks. At East Wind Dental Care, Dr. Ostovar uses CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology to design, create, and place high-quality ceramic crowns in a single visit.

How CEREC Works

CEREC combines digital impressions, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to create precise, beautiful crowns right in our office.

The CEREC Process:

1. Digital Impression:

Instead of messy putty impressions, Dr. O uses a digital scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your tooth and the surrounding teeth. This takes just minutes and is far more comfortable than traditional impressions.

2. Computer Design:

Using specialized CAD software, Dr. Ostovar designs your custom crown on a computer screen. The software considers your bite, the shape of surrounding teeth, and your specific needs. Dr. O has complete control over every detail of the crown’s design, ensuring optimal fit and function.

3. In-Office Milling:

Once the design is finalized, it’s sent to our in-office milling machine. This precision instrument carves your crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic material. The milling process takes about 10-15 minutes.

4. Finishing and Placement:

Dr. Ostovar polishes and refines the crown, checks the fit and bite, and makes any necessary adjustments. Once everything is perfect, the crown is bonded permanently to your tooth.

The entire process—from preparation to final placement—typically takes 2-3 hours. You leave with a permanent crown the same day, no temporary crown needed.

Benefits of CEREC Same-Day Crowns

Single-Visit Convenience:

No second appointment means less time off work, fewer trips to the dentist, and faster completion of your treatment.

No Temporary Crowns:

Temporary crowns can be uncomfortable, can fall off, and can make eating difficult. With CEREC, you skip the temporary crown entirely.

Superior Fit:

Digital impressions are more accurate than traditional impressions, and computer-designed crowns fit with exceptional precision. Better fit means better comfort and longer-lasting results.

High-Quality Materials:

CEREC crowns are made from high-strength ceramic materials that are durable, natural-looking, and biocompatible. These materials bond strongly to natural tooth structure and resist staining.

Natural Appearance:

CEREC crowns are designed to match the color, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth. Most people won’t be able to tell you have a crown.

Preservation of Tooth Structure:

Because CEREC crowns can be made thinner while maintaining strength, Dr. Ostovar can often preserve more of your natural tooth structure during preparation.

Immediate Results:

Walk in with a damaged tooth, leave the same day with a strong, beautiful, permanent restoration.

When Are CEREC Crowns Used?

CEREC technology is appropriate for most crown situations, including:

  • Broken or cracked teeth
  • Teeth weakened by large fillings
  • Teeth after root canal treatment
  • Severely decayed teeth
  • Cosmetic improvements
  • Worn or misshapen teeth

Laser Dentistry: Precision and Comfort

Dental lasers represent one of the most significant advances in comfortable, precise dental treatment. At East Wind Dental Care, Dr. Ostovar uses laser technology for a variety of soft tissue procedures, offering patients a more comfortable alternative to traditional methods.

How Dental Lasers Work

Dental lasers use focused light energy to remove or reshape soft tissue with extreme precision. The laser can be calibrated to specific wavelengths and power levels, allowing Dr. Ostovar to treat tissue with minimal impact on surrounding areas.

The laser energy removes tissue while simultaneously sealing blood vessels and nerve endings, resulting in less bleeding, less swelling, and less post-treatment discomfort.

Applications of Laser Dentistry

Gum Recontouring:

For patients with a “gummy smile,” the laser can reshape gum tissue to reveal more of the tooth, creating a more balanced, aesthetic smile.

Frenectomy:

The frenum is a small piece of tissue connecting the lip to the gums or the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When this tissue is too tight or thick, it can cause problems with speech, eating, or orthodontic treatment. A laser frenectomy is quick, comfortable, and heals rapidly.

Treatment of Gum Disease:

Lasers can remove diseased gum tissue and bacteria from periodontal pockets, promoting healing and reducing infection.

Lesion Removal:

Suspicious tissue, canker sores, or benign growths can be removed quickly and comfortably with the laser.

Crown Lengthening:

When a tooth needs a crown but there isn’t enough tooth structure above the gum line, the laser can reshape the gum and bone to expose more tooth.

Biopsy:

Tissue samples can be removed with the laser for laboratory analysis.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Less Discomfort:

Because lasers seal nerve endings as they work, many laser procedures can be performed with minimal or no anesthetic. Post-treatment discomfort is typically much less than with traditional methods.

Reduced Bleeding:

The laser seals blood vessels as it cuts, resulting in less bleeding during and after procedures.

Faster Healing:

Laser-treated tissue heals more quickly than tissue treated with scalpels or electrosurgery. The laser sterilizes as it works, reducing the risk of infection.

Greater Precision:

Lasers allow Dr. Ostovar to remove only the exact amount of tissue needed, preserving healthy tissue and achieving more precise results.

Less Swelling:

Laser procedures typically cause less trauma to tissue, resulting in less post-treatment swelling.

No Sutures:

Many laser procedures don’t require stitches, simplifying the procedure and eliminating the need for suture removal.

Digital Impressions: Comfortable, Accurate, Fast

Traditional dental impressions—those trays filled with goopy putty material—are uncomfortable, can trigger gagging, and aren’t always accurate. At East Wind Dental Care, we use digital impression technology that’s faster, more comfortable, and more precise.

How Digital Impressions Work

Instead of putty trays, Dr. Ostovar uses a small, handheld scanner that captures thousands of images of your teeth and gums. These images are processed by computer software to create a highly accurate 3D digital model of your mouth. The entire process takes just a few minutes.

Why Digital Impressions Are Better

No Gagging:

The most common complaint about traditional impressions is gagging. The putty material, the large trays, and the time required can trigger a strong gag reflex, especially for impressions of the upper teeth. Digital scanners eliminate this problem entirely. The scanner is small, doesn’t touch the roof of your mouth, and captures images quickly.

Greater Accuracy:

Traditional impressions can distort during the setting process or during removal from the mouth. Bubbles, voids, or tears in the material can require retakes. Digital impressions are highly accurate and consistent, with no distortion. If any area needs rescanning, it takes just seconds to capture additional images.

Immediate Results:

Traditional impressions had to be sent to a dental laboratory, which introduced delays and the possibility of shipping damage. Digital impressions are sent electronically to the lab (or to our CEREC machine for same-day crowns), eliminating shipping time and ensuring the model arrives perfect.

Better Communication with Labs:

When the dental laboratory receives a digital model, they can view it from every angle, take measurements, and communicate with Dr. Ostovar about the restoration—all electronically. This collaboration results in better-fitting, more aesthetic restorations.

Patient Comfort:

There’s no unpleasant taste, no messy cleanup, and no waiting for material to set. The experience is quick and comfortable.

Environmentally Friendly:

Digital impressions eliminate the plastic trays and impression materials that create waste. There’s no shipping of physical models, reducing the carbon footprint of your dental care.

When Digital Impressions Are Used

Digital impression technology is used for:

  • Crowns and bridges
  • Veneers
  • Inlays and onlays
  • Dental implant restorations
  • Invisalign® and other clear aligners
  • Dentures and partial dentures
  • Nightguards and athletic mouthguards

Sterilization Technology: Your Safety is Our Priority

While sterilization technology may not be as visible as digital X-rays or CEREC crowns, it’s perhaps the most important technology in our practice. At East Wind Dental Care, we maintain the highest standards of infection control using advanced sterilization equipment and strict protocols.

Our Sterilization Process

Instrument Processing:

After each use, dental instruments go through a multi-step sterilization process:

1. Pre-cleaning: Instruments are cleaned to remove debris

2. Ultrasonic cleaning: Instruments are placed in an ultrasonic cleaner that uses high-frequency sound waves to remove microscopic debris

3. Rinsing and drying: Instruments are thoroughly rinsed and dried

4. Packaging: Instruments are sealed in sterilization pouches with indicators

5. Autoclaving: Instruments are sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave using high-pressure steam

6. Quality verification: Chemical and biological indicators verify sterilization effectiveness

7. Storage: Sterilized instruments remain sealed until immediately before use

Advanced Sterilization Equipment

Medical-Grade Autoclaves:

Our autoclaves use steam under pressure to kill all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. Each sterilization cycle is monitored and documented to ensure effectiveness.

Ultrasonic Cleaners:

These cleaners use sound waves to clean instruments more thoroughly than hand scrubbing, removing debris from hard-to-reach areas.

Sterilization Monitoring:

We use chemical indicators with every load and biological indicators weekly to verify that our autoclaves are functioning properly and achieving complete sterilization.

Single-Use Items

Many items used in dental treatment are single-use disposable:

  • Gloves
  • Masks
  • Gauze and cotton
  • Anesthetic needles
  • Prophy angles (for cleanings)
  • Suction tips
  • Protective barriers

These items are opened fresh for each patient and disposed of immediately after use.

Environmental Disinfection

Between patients, treatment rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected:

  • All surfaces are wiped with medical-grade disinfectant
  • Protective barriers on equipment are replaced
  • Suction lines are flushed
  • Air quality is maintained with proper ventilation

Strict Protocols

Our team follows protocols established by:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • The American Dental Association (ADA)

Every team member receives regular training on infection control, and we stay current with the latest guidelines and best practices.

Your Peace of Mind

You can be confident that when you visit East Wind Dental Care, every instrument is properly sterilized, every surface is disinfected, and every protocol is followed. Your safety is our top priority, and we never compromise on infection control.

Frequently Asked Questions About Advanced Dental Technology

1. Is digital X-ray radiation safe?

Yes. Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and even traditional X-rays expose you to very low levels of radiation. The amount of radiation from a full set of digital dental X-rays is about the same as a few hours of sun exposure or a short airplane flight. The diagnostic benefits far outweigh the minimal radiation exposure.

2. How much do CEREC same-day crowns cost compared to traditional crowns?

CEREC crowns are typically comparable in cost to traditional crowns. While you’re paying for advanced technology, you’re saving the time and inconvenience of multiple appointments and temporary crowns. Many patients feel the convenience alone is worth any price difference. We’ll provide a detailed cost estimate during your consultation.

3. Does laser dentistry hurt?

Most laser procedures are far less uncomfortable than traditional methods. Because the laser seals nerve endings as it works, many procedures can be performed with minimal or no anesthetic. Patients typically report less discomfort during treatment and much less discomfort after treatment compared to traditional methods.

4. Why do I need a 3D scan instead of a regular X-ray?

Regular 2D X-rays are excellent for detecting decay and bone loss, but they can’t show the full three-dimensional structure of your jaw, teeth, and surrounding anatomy. For complex procedures like dental implant placement, evaluation of impacted teeth, or TMJ diagnosis, the detailed 3D information from a cone beam scan is essential for safe, precise treatment planning.

5. Are digital impressions as accurate as traditional impressions?

Digital impressions are typically more accurate than traditional impressions. Traditional impressions can distort as the material sets or when removed from the mouth. Digital impressions capture thousands of precise data points with no distortion, resulting in better-fitting restorations.

6. How do I know your sterilization is effective?

We follow strict CDC, OSHA, and ADA protocols, and we use chemical and biological indicators to verify that our sterilization equipment is functioning properly. Each sterilization cycle is monitored and documented. We’re happy to discuss our sterilization protocols with you—your safety is our top priority.

7. Can I get a same-day crown for any tooth?

CEREC technology works well for most single-tooth crowns. However, for more complex cases like bridges, or when certain aesthetic considerations are involved, a traditional crown from a dental laboratory may be preferable. Dr. Ostovar will recommend the best option for your specific situation.

8. Will my insurance cover treatment with advanced technology?

Most insurance plans cover treatment regardless of the technology used—they care about the procedure, not the tools. For example, if your plan covers crowns, it will typically cover CEREC crowns just as it would traditional crowns. We’ll verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage.

9. How often should I have X-rays taken?

This depends on your individual risk factors. Patients with good oral health and no history of decay may only need X-rays every 12-24 months. Patients with active decay, gum disease, or other risk factors may need more frequent X-rays. Dr. Ostovar follows evidence-based guidelines and only recommends X-rays when they’re necessary for your care.

10. Does advanced technology make dental care more expensive?

Not necessarily. While the initial investment in technology is significant, it often makes treatment more efficient, reducing chair time and lab fees. Additionally, more accurate diagnoses and better-fitting restorations mean fewer problems and redos, which saves money in the long run. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care at fair, transparent prices.
