Crossing international borders can often be riddled with unexpected challenges, and entering Algodones, Mexico, was no different. Sandy and I faced an initial confusion about time zones as our train journey coincided with the end of daylight savings time in the U.S. Arizona doesn’t observe daylight savings, and Amtrak had informed us of an adjusted train schedule without specifying why. Arriving in Yuma at 8:25 PM Mountain Time left us racing against the clock to cross the border before 10:00 PM.
Upon arrival in Yuma, the absence of an Amtrak station or staff added to the challenge. Fortunately, a Union Pacific police officer helped arrange a taxi for us. Sandy had already scouted the area and used this time to visit a nearby café, The Mad Chef. The restaurant, humorously renamed post-divorce from The Happy Chef, provided a short stop before our taxi whisked us to the border.
Hindered by US taxis not being allowed to cross into Mexico, we were dropped at the border and guided by our helpful driver. The crossing itself was uneventful yet strangely quiet, typical of pedestrian border entries.
Discovering Dental Care in Algodones
Upon arrival in Algodones, another cab took us to our hotel, Hacienda Algodones, where we were warmly greeted. We were informed that despite our late arrival, the chances of finding an open restaurant were slim. Most places closed by 7:30 PM, a fact confirmed by our driver. Nevertheless, we were taken to a taco stand, where fresh, flavorful tacos made for a satisfying late-night meal.
The hotel, situated just a short drive from the border, was comfortable with an intriguing blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. Although the furnishing could use improvements, such as more closet space and finished drawers, the hospitality was unparalleled. Day two began with a simple breakfast, enjoyed outdoors amidst the pleasant weather. Our hotel hostess revealed that the facility was once her home and that she was a practicing dentist in Algodones. With this newfound trust, we set off for our dental appointments.
Timing again was an issue, as Algodones follows California time. Fortunately, most dental practices, including ours, operated on Yuma time, avoiding potential chaos. While Sandy’s dental follow-up was uneventful, challenges arose with our transportation. With taxis scarce, our hotel host graciously offered us a ride back. Such informality and kindness were recurring themes during our stay.

In the afternoon, courtesy of our hotel’s owner, I received a secondary dental consultation. With differing opinions between dentists, it became clear that further research and discussions with my regular dentist were necessary.
Sandy explored options for hearing aids. The prices in Algodones were significantly lower than U.S. alternatives, making it a viable option for him.
After a busy day, we made a final stop at the pharmacy before retreating to our hotel for a satisfying dinner of meatball and vegetable soup.
